The National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) is a public research institute established by Legislative Decree n. 381 of 20/9/1999. The institute operates in the field of geophysical, volcanological and environmental research and is divided into ten Institutional Sections and numerous branches distributed over the national territory.
The Pisa Section of the INGV has two main research objectives: 1) to quantify the dynamics of geological processes with the aim of understanding what triggers them and the mechanisms that regulate them, and 2) to estimate the risk hazard associated with these processes in order to help mitigate natural risk hazards.
Research is multidisciplinary, integrating the fields of geology, petrology and tectonics with physical-mathematical modelling and the numerical simulation of processes.
