Lava flow modeling and hazards in Saudi Arabia and Hawaii

| 6 giugno 2016 | ore 11.00 | Hannah Dietterich e Matthew Patrick, USGS | Sala seminari – INGV Sezione di Pisa

Abstract

The seminars by Matthew Patrick and Hannah Dietterich (back-to-back, 30 min each) will turn around the theme of lava flow modeling for hazard assessment purposes. Matthew will focus on a recent crisis in Hawaii, where lava flows caused loss of properties. Hannah, instead, will talk about constructing a lava flow hazard map for a volcanic field (Harrat Rahat) in Saudi Arabia using an implementation of the DOWNFLOW code. She will also discuss development of computational fluid dynamics models for lava flow simulation and a model benchmarking study to compare performance of different codes in simulating the behavior of viscous, cooling, and solidifying flows.
